We manufacture 317 Stud Bolts are similar to Grade B8 but instead are manufactured from AISI 317 stainless steel as opposed to AISI 304 stainless steel. Type 317 stainless offers superior corrosion resistance to type 304 stainless due to the added molybdenum.
Alloy 317 Stud Bolts does exhibit surface corrosion, usually visible as brown staining, which is further particularly associated with crevices and rough surface finish. Low thermal conductivity of austenitic alloys like Grade 317 Stud Bolts results in heat concentrating at the cutting edges, which means coolants and lubricants are necessary and must be used in large quantities. Type 317 Stud Bolts also possesses excellent mechanical and corrosion properties at sub-zero temperatures, where special consideration is needed to compensate for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion. Concentrations of salt in seawater can vary in AISI 317 Stud Bolts, and splash zones can cause concentrations to increase dramatically from the spray and evaporation.
