What are pipe flanges?

Pipe flanges are forged ring connections that join pipe, valves, pumps and equipment with bolts and a gasket. Facing (RF, FF or RTJ), bore and pressure class must match the piping class. Most industrial packages follow ASME B16.5 for NPS 1/2 to 24 and ASME B16.47 for larger OD, with ASTM/ASME material specs for chemistry and mechanicals.

Standards that define the package

Dimensional control is usually ASME B16.5 (pipe flanges and flanged fittings) or ASME B16.47 Series A/B for large-diameter flanges. Metric projects often call EN 1092-1 / DIN. Material is ordered to the ASTM forging specification that matches the pipe:

  • Stainless - ASTM A182 / ASME SA182 (F304, F304L, F316, F316L, F321, F347, F904L, F44 / SMO 254)
  • Carbon / LTCS / high-yield - ASTM A105, A350 LF2, A694 F42 to F70
  • Chrome-moly alloy - ASTM A182 F5, F9, F11, F22, F91
  • Duplex / super duplex - UNS S31803 / S32205, S32750, S32760
  • Nickel alloys - Inconel 600/601/625, Monel 400/K500, Hastelloy C22/C276, Nickel 200/201
  • Copper-nickel - CuNi 90/10 and 70/30
  • Titanium / specialty - Grade 2 / Grade 5, Alloy 20, AISI 4130

Flange types we supply

Common ASME forms stocked and made to order:

Sizes, classes and facings

Typical supply covers ASME Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500 (project-dependent), with raised face (RF), flat face (FF) or ring-type joint (RTJ). Bore and schedule must match the connected pipe. Marking normally includes size, class, material grade, heat number and manufacturer identification for full traceability.

How to choose the right grade

  • General stainless process - start with 304 / 304L; move to 316L for chlorides
  • High temperature / chrome-moly - F11 / F22 / F91 matched to A335 pipe
  • Low temperature carbon - A350 LF2 with A333 Gr.6 systems
  • Pipeline / high yield - A694 grades aligned to API 5L strength levels
  • Seawater / high PREN - duplex S32205, super duplex S32750, or SMO 254
  • Severe corrosion - Inconel 625, Hastelloy C276, Monel 400, or titanium Grade 2/5

What to put on the enquiry or purchase order

To quote quickly, include: material grade / ASTM class (e.g. A182 F316L), flange type and facing (WNRF RF, SORF, Blind RTJ, etc.), size and pressure class, bore/schedule, quantity, destination, and documentation (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, PMI, NACE MR0175 notes, third-party inspection). Documentation and inspection

Supply packages can include mill test certificates, heat-number traceability, dimensional reports, and optional NDT or buyer/TPI attendance. Products are marked per applicable ASTM/ASME requirements so each flange ties back to the certified heat.

Typical applications

Flanges are used wherever bolted piping must connect equipment, valves or removable spools — oil & gas and refining, chemical and petrochemical plants, power and utility steam lines, water treatment, marine and offshore modules, skids and fabrication yards. Pair flanges with matching pipe, buttweld fittings and fasteners from the same material family when the project requires a single MTC trail.
