ASME B16.5 Reducing flanges are made of different materials depending on the application requirements. ASME B16.5 approved Reduce flange design and construction. Reducing flange is used to reduce the diameter of the pipe. The Reducing flange joint consists of a reducing flange and a Standard Flange, which acts as a reducing coupling. As shown in Figure 1, the larger end of reducing flange A, in contact with standard flange B, is called the "dimension from which the reduction is made"; the smaller end of the reduction flange A, which will be Welded Pipe, is known as the "dimension to which the reduction is carried out". The stream should go from smallest to largest size. If the direction of the flow is reversed, serious turbulence can develop.
As shown in Figure 1, Reducing flanges are usually composed of 3 parts: i - flange, ii - flange thickness, iii - flange hub. Its characteristics are obvious: the face size, thickness, bolt size and outside diameter of the reduced flange are the same as those of the standard flange of the size from which the reduction is made. The size of the hub as well as the hole diameter of the reduction flange is usually the same as that of a standard flange of the size in which the reduction is made.
Why use a reducing flange?

The total length of this configuration is 2L+H, much longer than the L+M of a reduced flange joint, as shown in Figure-1. Types of Reducing Flanges
Reducer flanges manufactured according to ASME B16.5 are available in grades 150 to 2500. The surface of the reducer flange shall be the same as that of a standard matching flange. Generally, four types of reducer flanges are available as standard: reducer weld neck flange, reduce Slip on Flange, reduce threaded flange and reduce socket weld flange
- Type 1 Reducing flange: if the bore reduction is fairly minor, the bolt holes must be spaced on / off centers so that they do not collide.
- Type 2 Reducing flange: When the reduction is not significant and the perimeter of the smaller bore mating flange would impinge on the nuts, these flanges with threaded bolt holes are used
- Type 3 Reducing flange: flanges with through holes for big bore bolts that are utilized where bores are significantly reduced.
