Stainless sheet, plate and coil — where to start

Most stainless fabrication jobs come down to three questions: how thick, which grade, and which finish. This page is our map of ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 flats — sheet for everyday work, plate when you need thickness, coil when you will slit or cut to length.

What we actually keep talking about with buyers

• Austenitic workhorses — 304, 304L, 316, 316L, plus 321, 347, 310S, 904L when the job asks
• Duplex / super duplex — 2205 (S31803 / S32205) and S32750 / S32760 for tougher chloride duty
• Specialty flats — Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel and similar when stainless has run out of room

Pick a form first

• Sheets — thinner flats for fabrication and finishing
• Plates — heavier stock, cut-to-size when you need it
• Coils — for slitting and cut-to-length programmes
• Chequered plate — floors, ramps and walkways
• Shim & foil — when thickness has to be exact

Sizes and finishes in practice

We quote from about 0.15 mm to 100 mm thick, with common widths 1000 / 1250 / 1500 / 2000 mm. Finish is usually 2B or hot-rolled No.1; No.4, BA and No.8 mirror when the face will be seen.

A simple grade path

• General service — start with 304 / 304L; step to 316L for chlorides
• Heat / stabilized — 321, 347, 310S
• Aggressive chemistry — 904L, duplex / super duplex
• Non-slip floors — chequered plate
