304L keeps the 18/8 idea but lowers carbon so carbide precipitation is less of a worry after welding. Fabricators often prefer it for thicker welded work.
Pick 304L when the weld procedure or thickness pushes you away from straight 304. Dual stock: 304 / 304L. Chlorides? Think 316L.
