Scope of API 5L Seamless Pipe

1 PURPOSE AND COVERAGE

The purpose of this specification is to provide standards for pipes suitable for the transportation of gas, water and oil, both in the oil and natural gas industries. This specification applies to seamless and welded steel line pipe. This includes plain-end, threaded-end, and bell-end tubing, as well as through-the-future-line (TFL) tubing and tubing with engineered ends for use in specialty couplings. Plain-ended line pipes meeting this specification are primarily intended for field assembly by circumferential welding, but the manufacturer is not responsible for field welding.

2 PRODUCT SPECIFICATION LEVEL (PSL)

This specification specifies requirements for two products Specification level (PSL I and PSL 2). These two PSL specifications define different levels of standard technical requirements. PSL 2 sets mandatory requirements for carbon equivalent, notch toughness, ultimate yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength. These and other differences are: They are summarized in Appendix 1. Requirements that apply only to PSL I or only to PSL 2 are marked as such. Requirements not tied to a specific PSL apply to both PSL I and PSL 2.

3 GRADES

Pipe sizes larger than 23/8 are expressed as whole numbers and fractions. Pipe sizes smaller than 23/8 are displayed to three decimal places. PROCESS OF MANUFACTURE

Steel coils or plates are formed into cylindrical shapes and longitudinal seams are welded using advanced welding techniques. After the tube forming stage, the API 5L tube undergoes a heat treatment process to improve its mechanical properties and microstructure.

Seamless Process

The seamless process is a process of hot working steel to form a tubular product without a welded seam. If necessary, the hot worked tubular product may be subsequently cold finished to produce the desired shape, dimensions, and properties.

Continuous Welding

Continuous welding is a process in which the steel is continuously flowed into the welding machine by heating the bar in a furnace and forming a seam by mechanically pressing the formed edges, joining successive coils of the bar. (It is a type of butt welding.)

Scope

ANSI / API 5L specifies the manufacture of two product levels (PSL1 and PSL2) of Seamless Steel Pipe and Welded steel pipe for the use of a pipeline in the transportation of petroleum and Natural Gas. for material use in a sour service application, refer to Annex H; for offshore service application, refer to Annex J of API 5L 45th Edition.

Process

Ingots, blooms, billets, coils or plates used for the manufacture of pipe shall be made via basic oxygen, electric furnace or open hearth in combination with a ladle refining process. for PSL2, the Steel Seamless Pipe shall be killed and melted according to a fine grain practice. Coil or plate used for PSL2 pipe shall not contain any repair welds.

Hydrostatic test

Pipe to withstand a hydrostatic test without leakage through the weld seam or the pipe body. Jointers need not be hydrostatic tested provide the pipe sections used were successfully tested.

Bend test

No cracks shall occur in any portion of the test piece and no opening of the weld shall occur.

Flattening test

Acceptance criteria for flattening test shall be:

  • EW Pipes D< 12.750 in:
  • X60 with T 500in. There shall be no opening of the weld before the distance between the plates is less than 66% of the original outside diameter. for all grades and wall, 50%.
  • For pipe with a D/t 10, there shall be no opening of the weld before the distance between the plates is less than 30% of the original outside diameter.
  • For other sizes refer to the full API 5L specification.

CVN impact test for PSL2

Many PSL2 pipe sizes and grades require CVN. Seamless Pipe is to be tested in the body. Welded pipe is to be tested in the body, pipe weld and heat-affected zone. Refer to the full API 5L specification for the chart of sizes and grades and required absorbed energy values.
