API satnd for American Petroleum Institute API 5L X46 pipe is available as a seamless welded steel tube for pipeline transportation systems in the oil and Natural Gas industry. API 5L X46N pipes are suitable for transporting gas, water and oil. SSC test stand for sulfide stress cracking a type of hydrogen stress cracking, is a cracking mechanism in pipelines, plant lines, and any equipment exposed to acidic (wet H2S) operating conditions.
API 5L specification Covers Seamless and Welded Steel Line Pipe. It includes standard-weight and Extra-Strong threaded Line Pipe. It includes standard-weight and extra-strong threaded line pipe; and standard-weight plain-end, regular-weight plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end pipe; as as well as bell and spigot and through-the-flow line(TFL) pipe. API 5L Line Pipe is dimensionally equivalent to A106 and A53 pipe, conforming to industry standard sizes, however it performs to different mechanical properties.
One key defining characteristic of this pipe is its yield strength, where the two digit number following the pipe’s "X" grade indicates the Minimum Yield Strength (in 000's psi) of pipe produced to this grade (i.e. X52 Pipe) The purpose of this specification is to provide standards for pipe suitable for use in conveying gas, water, and oil in both the oil and natural gas industries Grades covered by this specification are A25 ,A ,B (and the following "X" Grades), X42, X46, X52, X60, X65, & X70. The two digit number following the "X" indicates the Minimum Yield Strength (in 000's psi) of pipe produced to this grade.
After removing the SSC specimen from the test medium, the previously tensioned sample surface should be examined under a low-power microscope at 10x magnification. The appearance of surface fracture cracks or cracks on the stress side of the specimen should be considered. Represents specimen failure unless it can be proven that this is not due to sulfide stress cracking.
Tests to evaluate resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking must meet the following acceptance criteria: Each ratio is the maximum allowable average of three sections per test sample when tested in solution.
If HIC/SWC testing is performed in an alternative medium to simulate specific operating conditions, alternative acceptance criteria may be agreed.
For specimens subjected to hardness testing, the hardness of the pipe body, weld, and HAZ must be ≤ 250 HV10 or 22 HRC (70.6 HR 15N). If agreed with the end user and the specified wall thickness exceeds 9 mm, the maximum permissible hardness measured at the notch in the column located 1.5 mm from the outside diameter surface of the pipe is ≤ 275 HV10 or 26 HRC (73.0 HR). 15N).
SSC test to evaluate the resistance of pipeline and pressure vessel plate steels to Sour Service Corrosion caused by hydrogen absorption from aqueous sulfide corrosion. An unstressed test specimen is exposed to a solution at ambient temperature and pressure and after a specified time, the test specimen is removed and evaluated.
NACE TM0284 specifies either Solution A or Solution B. Solution A is acidified brine. Solution B is simulated seawater prepared in accordance with ASTM D1141.52. In either case, H2S is bubbled through the solution constantly throughout the test period. NACE TM0284 specifies test duration of 96 hours
A detailed written report upon completion of each test. Each report includes a description of the test sample that was received, the test procedure that was used, and the pH values of the test solution before exposure and after the exposure. The test bars are cut into sections and examined under a microscope for hydrogen-induced cracks. The dimensions of any such cracks are recorded and used to compute the values in percentage for Crack Length Ratio (CLR), Crack Thickness Ratio (CTR) and Crack Sensitivity Ratio (CSR).

a for intermediate grades, the difference between the specified maximum yield strength and the specified minimum yield strength shall be as given in the table for the next higher grade, and the difference between the specified minimum tensile strength and the specified minimum yield strength shall be as given in the table for the next higher grade, for intermediate grades, the tensile strength shall be ≤ 760 MPa (110 200 psi). b This limit applies for pipe with D >323, 9 mm (12.750 in). U is the specified minimum tensile strength, expressed in megapascals (pounds per square inch). |
H.4.3 HIC/SWC test The test for evaluation of resistance-to hydrogen- induced cracking shall meet the following acceptance criteria, with each ratio being the maximum permissible average for three sections per test specimen when tested in solution (Environment) A (see ISO 15156-2:2003, Table B.3): a) crack sensitivity ratio (CSR) ≤ 2 %; b) crack length ratio (CLR) ≤ 15 %; c) crack thickness ratio (CTR) ≤ 5 %; If HIC/SWC tests are conducted in alternative . media (see H.7.3.1.3) to simulate specific service conditions, alternative acceptance criteria may be agreed. |
Hardness test The maximum acceptabie hareness of an unexposed weld cap and external surface HAZ and base metal may be 275 HV10 or 26 HRC (73,0 HR 15N) where the equipment user agrees to the alternative weld cap hardness limit, the parent pipe wall thickness is greater than 9 mm, the weld cap is not exposed directly to the sour environment and the escape of hydrogen is not impeded, e.g by cathodic protection. |
