Chrome Moly Seamless Pipe (Cr-Mo / ASTM A335)

ASME SA335 companion grades for high-temperature boiler and process piping

Chrome moly ASTM A335 seamless alloy steel pipes P5 through P92

Savoy Piping Inc. supplies chrome moly seamless pipe — chromium-molybdenum alloy steel pipe ordered most often to ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 for elevated-temperature power, petrochemical and refinery service.

“Chrome moly” is the shop name; the PO should still carry the exact P-grade, wall / schedule, heat treatment and documentation (EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2, and IBR Form III-C when required).

Core grades: P5, P9, P11, P22, P91, P92. Tube twins live under ASTM A213. Category hub: Alloy Steel Seamless.

What is chrome moly pipe?

Chrome moly pipe is ferritic alloy-steel pipe alloyed primarily with chromium and molybdenum. Chromium improves oxidation resistance; molybdenum improves elevated-temperature strength and creep performance. CSEF grades (P91/P92) add controlled microalloying for advanced steam duty.

Typical applications

  • Boiler headers, main steam and hot reheat piping
  • HRSG and power-plant elevated-temperature lines
  • Refinery heater and high-temperature process piping
  • Matched tube systems in A213 / SA213 grades

How to choose P11, P22, P91 or P92

P11 covers many intermediate chrome moly duties; P22 as temperatures climb; P91 for CSEF supercritical steam; P92 when tungsten-bearing creep strength is specified. Heater/sulfidation packages often use P5 / P9.

ASTM A335 Chrome Moly Pipes

Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service

This specification2 covers nominal wall and minimum wall seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe intended for high temperature service. Pipe ordered to this specification shall be suitable for bending, flanging (vanstoning), and similar forming operations, and for fusion welding. Selection will depend upon design, service conditions, Mechanical Properties, and high-temperature characteristics.

ASTM A335 Pipe (ASME S/A335, Chorme-Moly) is a seamless ferritic Alloy-Steel Pipe for high temperature service. Pipe ordered to this specification shall be suitable for bending, flanging (vanstoning), and similar forming operations, and for fusion welding. Sometimes referred to as “P Grade”, Chrome Moly Pipe is popular in P-Grades P5, P9, P11, P22, and P91. The most common use of grades P11, P22, and P91 is in the power industry and petro-chemical plants, Grades P5 and P9 are commonly used in refineries.

A335 is often called chrome moly pipe because of the chemical makeup of Molybdenum (Mo) and Chromium (Cr). Molybdenum increases the strength of steel as well as the elastic limit, resistance to wear, impact qualities, and hardenability. Moly increases the resistance to softening, restrains grain growth and makes chromium steel less susceptible to embrittlement. Moly is the most effective single additive that increases high temperature creep strength. It also enhances the corrosion resistance of steel, and inhibits pitting. Chromium (or chrome) is the essential constituent of stainless steel. Any steel with 12% or more Chrome is considered stainless. Chrome is virtually irreplaceable in resisting oxidation at elevated temperatures. Chrome raises the tensile, yield, and hardness at room temperatures. The composition chrome moly Alloy Steel pipe make it ideal for use in power plants, refineries, petro chemical plants, and oil field services where fluids and gases are transported at extremely high temperatures and pressures.

Frequently asked questions — Chrome Moly Pipe

What is chrome moly pipe?

Chrome moly pipe is chromium-molybdenum alloy steel pipe for elevated-temperature service. It is commonly ordered to ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 grades such as P11, P22, P91 and P92.

Is chrome moly the same as ASTM A335?

In piping procurement, yes in practice — chrome moly usually means A335/SA335 Cr-Mo grades. Always confirm the exact P-grade and documentation on the purchase order.

P22 or P91 — how do I decide?

P22 is conventional 2.25Cr-1Mo. P91 is modified 9Cr CSEF steel with much higher creep strength for advanced steam temperatures. They are not interchangeable without design review.
