If your design office has already stretched P91 on creep margins or wall thickness, P92 is usually the next conversation. Compared with P91, P92 lowers molybdenum and adds tungsten (with controlled boron and microalloying) to improve creep rupture strength, which can allow higher design temperatures or thinner walls when the code and project specs support it.

Supply discipline matters more here than marketing adjectives. Chemistry windows are tight, heat treatment must be correct, and welding/PWHT procedures are specialist CSEF work. What is ASTM A335 P92 pipe?

ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 Grade P92 is seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe for high-temperature service. It is a creep-strength-enhanced ferritic steel based on roughly 9% chromium, with tungsten additions, reduced molybdenum versus P91, and microalloying (V, Nb, B, N) controlled to specification.

P92 was developed to push steam-cycle efficiency — better creep strength at elevated temperature than conventional Cr-Mo grades and, in many design cases, an advance on P91 for USC service. Like other A335 grades, the pipe must be suitable for forming and fusion welding, but fabrication must follow qualified CSEF procedures.

European designation often referenced alongside P92 is X10CrWMoVNb9-2 (EN). Always order to the governing purchase specification (ASTM A335 / ASME SA335) and confirm heat-treatment and testing clauses on the PO.

P92 vs P91 — quick buyer guidance

Choose P92 when the design needs the extra creep capability of tungsten-bearing 9Cr CSEF steel for USC or similarly demanding steam duty. Stay with P91 when the approved piping class, welding procedures, and inventory strategy are already built around modified 9Cr-1Mo and P92 is not required by design. Neither grade replaces conventional P22 without a full engineering review.

ASTM A335 P92 pipes other mechanical test

Transverse or Longitudinal Tension Test and Flattening Test, Hardness Test, or Bend Test
For material heat treated in a batch-type furnace, tests shall be made on 5% of the pipe from each treated lot. for small lots, at least one pipe shall be tested.
For material heat treated by the continuous process, tests shall be made on a sufficient number of pipe to constitute 5% of the lot, but in no case less than 2 pipe.
Notes for Hardness Test: Grades P91, P92, P122, and P911 shall have a hardness not exceeding 250 HB / 265 HV [25 HRC].
Notes for Bend Test: For pipe whose diameter exceeds NPS 25 and whose diameter to wall thickness ratio is 7.0 or less shall be subjected to the bend test instead of the flattening test.
Other pipe whose diameter equals or exceeds NPS 10 may be given the bend test in place of the flattening test subject to the approval of the purchaser.
The bend test specimens shall be bent at room temperature through 180° without cracking on the outside of the bent portion.
The inside diameter of the bend shall be 1 inch [25 mm].
Hydrostatic test Each length of pipe shall be Hydro tested, at option of manufacture, nondestructive electric testing can be used.
