Savoy Piping Inc. stocks and supplies ASTM A335 P5 / ASME SA335 Grade P5 seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe — the classic 5Cr-0.5Mo chrome moly grade (UNS K41545) specified where carbon steel cannot hold oxidation or sulfidation resistance in hot hydrocarbon service.
If you are buying P5 for a heater transfer line, furnace outlet, or high-temperature process loop, you usually need more than a generic “alloy pipe” description. Buyers ask for wall schedule, heat-treatment condition, hardness, and whether the mill can support IBR / Form III-C documentation for boiler-linked systems. That is the practical side of this grade — and where we focus our supply.
Where P5 fits: refinery heaters, crude and vacuum unit hot piping, petrochemical process lines, and other elevated-temperature duties where 5% chromium improves scale and sulfidation resistance over lower Cr-Mo grades. Compared with P11 or P22 (common in power steam systems), P5 is still the refinery workhorse for many heater and transfer applications.
We supply P5 alongside the full chrome moly family — P9, P11, P22, P91, P92 — and matching tube grades under ASTM A213. Pipe is offered hot-finished or cold-drawn seamless, in common ASME B36.10 sizes, with EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 MTCs and third-party inspection on request.

ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 Grade P5 is a seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe for high-temperature service. The chemistry is built around roughly 5% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum. Chromium improves oxidation and high-temperature corrosion resistance; molybdenum supports creep strength and resists softening in service.
Pipe ordered to A335 must be suitable for bending, flanging (vanstoning), similar forming, and fusion welding. Final grade selection always depends on design metal temperature, pressure, corrosion environment, and fabrication practice — not just the P-number on the PO.
In refinery language, P5 is often chosen for heater tubes and hot transfer lines exposed to sulfur-bearing process streams. When sulfidation risk is higher, projects frequently step up to ASTM A335 P9 (9Cr-1Mo). For boiler and power piping at moderate steam temperatures, P11 and P22 remain more common.
P5 (5Cr-0.5Mo) sits between low-chrome power grades and higher-chrome refinery grades. Choose P5 when you need better sulfidation/oxidation resistance than P11/P22 but do not yet need the higher chromium of P9. Choose P9 for more aggressive high-temperature sulfur service. Choose P11 / P22 for most subcritical power-plant steam headers and main steam lines. For supercritical creep-critical steam systems, look at P91 or P92.

ASTM A335 P5 (5Cr-0.5Mo) seamless pipe is used mainly in refinery and petrochemical high-temperature piping — heater transfer lines, hot oil circuits, and process lines where oxidation and sulfidation resistance matter more than in carbon steel or low-chrome grades.
Yes for practical procurement. ASTM A335 Grade P5 and ASME SA335 Grade P5 share the same chemistry and mechanical intent. For IBR boiler work in India, purchasers often write SA335 P5 and ask for Form III-C certification in addition to the mill test certificate.
P5 has roughly 5% chromium; P9 has roughly 9% chromium with higher molybdenum. P9 generally offers stronger resistance in more severe high-temperature sulfidation environments, while P5 remains widely specified for many heater and transfer services.
We supply ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 P5 seamless pipe typically from about 3/8" NB to 30" NB across common schedules (SCH 20 through XXS, heavier walls on request), in single or double random lengths or cut-to-length, with plain or beveled ends.
We supply this product for domestic and export projects with MTC (EN 10204 3.1 standard; 3.2 / TPI on request). Include destination, Incoterms and inspection needs on the RFQ.
