ASTM A335 P22 Chrome Moly Seamless Pipe (2.25Cr-1Mo)

ASME SA335 Grade P22 alloy steel pipe for main steam, hot reheat and high-temperature headers

ASTM A335 P22 alloy steel seamless pipes for power plant and high-temperature process service

Savoy Piping Inc. supplies ASTM A335 P22 / ASME SA335 Grade P22 seamless chrome moly pipe — the 2.25Cr-1Mo grade (UNS K21590) that remains a workhorse for hotter steam systems in subcritical power plants and many high-temperature process units.

P22 is the grade many EPC and boiler teams reach for when P11 is no longer comfortable on metal temperature or allowable stress, but the design has not yet moved into CSEF 9Cr territory (P91/P92). Think main steam, hot reheat, and high-temperature headers where oxidation resistance and creep strength both matter.

Procurement reality: heavy-wall schedules, correct heat treatment (normalise + temper), hardness control after welding/PWHT, and clean MTC chemistry are what keep P22 packages moving through inspection. We support EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates, optional IBR Form III-C, and third-party inspection.

What is ASTM A335 P22 pipe?

ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 Grade P22 is seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe for high-temperature service with approximately 2.25% chromium and 1% molybdenum. The extra chromium versus P11 improves oxidation resistance; the higher molybdenum supports elevated-temperature strength and creep performance in steam service.

A335 P22 pipe is specified for bending, flanging, forming, and fusion welding. It is widely used in power generation for hotter steam lines and headers, and also appears in petrochemical high-temperature piping classes. Selection must follow code allowable stresses and the project’s design metal temperature — P22 is not automatically interchangeable with P11 or P91.

In the chrome moly family, P22 sits above P11 for temperature capability and below the CSEF grades P91 / P92, which are used when supercritical / ultra-supercritical creep design requires 9Cr modified steels.

Typical applications of ASTM A335 P22 pipe

  • Main steam and hot reheat piping in subcritical thermal power plants
  • High-temperature boiler headers and thick-wall manifolds
  • Superheater connecting piping where 2.25Cr-1Mo is classed
  • Petrochemical high-temperature process lines needing Cr-Mo strength and oxidation resistance
  • Matched systems with A234 WP22 fittings and A182 F22 flanges

P22 vs P11 vs P91 — quick buyer guidance

Choose P22 when steam or process metal temperatures push beyond comfortable P11 duty and the design still uses conventional 2.25Cr-1Mo. Stay with P11 for many economiser / IP / cooler header applications. Move to P91 or P92 for creep-strength-enhanced supercritical steam systems where thinner walls or higher allowable stresses are required. Matching tube: A213 T22.

Frequently asked questions — ASTM A335 P22

What is ASTM A335 P22 used for?

ASTM A335 P22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) seamless pipe is commonly used for main steam, hot reheat, high-temperature headers, and other elevated-temperature power and process piping where higher Cr-Mo performance than P11 is required.

P11 or P22 — how do I decide?

P22 has higher chromium and molybdenum than P11, so it generally performs better as temperature and creep demand rise. Many projects use P11 for intermediate headers and P22 for hotter steam lines. Follow the piping class and ASME allowable stress tables rather than substituting on habit.

Is ASME SA335 P22 required for IBR jobs?

For Indian boiler installations under IBR, purchasers often specify ASME SA335 Grade P22 with Form III-C certification. Standard EN 10204 3.1 alone may not satisfy the boiler inspector — confirm the documentation package before ordering.

What sizes of P22 pipe are available?

Savoy Piping Inc. supplies ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 P22 seamless pipe across common NPS ranges (typically 3/8" to 30" NB) and schedules SCH 20 through XXS, with heavier walls available on request, plain or beveled ends.

Export & documentation
