Sour Service Corrosion (SOUR) Test, NACE TM0284
SSC test to evaluate the resistance of pipeline and pressure vessel plate steels to Sour Service Corrosion caused by hydrogen absorption from aqueous sulfide corrosion. An unstressed test specimen is exposed to a solution at ambient temperature and pressure and after a specified time, the test specimen is removed and evaluated.
Specimen Size
To conduct the SSC test, requires the following sample sizes:
Pipe - upto 2" OD - 200mm long
If the pipe is more than 2" OD pipe - 100mm long sample size is required
Number of pieces to be tested upto 88mm thick/dia - set of 3 pieces to be tested
Number of pieces to be tested more than 88mm thick/dia - 5 pieces to be tested
NACE TM0284 Test Solution
NACE TM0284 specifies either Solution A or Solution B. Solution A is acidified brine. Solution B is simulated seawater prepared in accordance with ASTM D1141.52. In either case, H2S is bubbled through the solution constantly throughout the test period. NACE TM0284 specifies test duration of 96 hours.
Detailed Report
A detailed written report upon completion of each test. Each report includes a description of the test sample that was received, the test procedure that was used, and the pH values of the test solution before exposure and after the exposure. The test bars are cut into sections and examined under a microscope for hydrogen-induced cracks. The dimensions of any such cracks are recorded and used to compute the values in percentage for Crack Length Ratio (CLR), Crack Thickness Ratio (CTR) and Crack Sensitivity Ratio (CSR).

H.4.3 HIC/SWC test The test for evaluation of resistance-to hydrogen- induced cracking shall meet the following acceptance criteria, with each ratio being the maximum permissible average for three sections per test specimen when tested in solution (Environment) A (see ISO 15156-2:2003, Table B.3): a) crack sensitivity ratio (CSR) ≤ 2 %; b) crack length ratio (CLR) ≤ 15 %; c) crack thickness ratio (CTR) ≤ 5 %; If HIC/SWC tests are conducted in alternative . media (see H.7.3.1.3) to simulate specific service conditions, alternative acceptance criteria may be agreed. |
H.4.4 Hardness test The maximum acceptabie hareness of an unexposed weld cap and external surface HAZ and base metal may be 275 HV10 or 26 HRC (73,0 HR 15N) where the equipment user agrees to the alternative weld cap hardness limit, the parent pipe wall thickness is greater than 9 mm, the weld cap is not exposed directly to the sour environment and the escape of hydrogen is not impeded, e.g by cathodic protection. |
