Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSC), NACE TM 0177
Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSC) is a form of hydrogen embrittlement cracking which occurs when a susceptible material is exposed to a corrosive environment containing water and H2S at a critical level of applied or residual tensile stress. TCR Engineering Services in Mumbai, India conducts the NACE TM0177 tests including Methods A and B for SSCC test, at our corrosion testing laboratory.
NACE TM0177 Test Details
NACE TM0177 tests includes the following methods:
Method A: Tensile Test (Proof Rings)
Method B: Bent Beam Test (3 or 4 Point Bends)
NACE TM0177 specifies Solution A (acidified), Solution B (acidified and buffered) and Solution C (for martensitic stainless steel). Solution A is used in Methods A unless the properties of Solution B or C are specified. In any case, H2S is bubbled through the solution constantly throughout the test period.
Testing is performed in NACE solutions A and/or B, saturated with H2S at 24º and 90º Celsius. Stressed samples are exposed to sour environment for a pre-determined time, after which they are removed and analyzed for crack detection. NACE TM0177 specifies test duration of 30 days (720 hours) for Method A or B test.
The SSCC tests are performed routinely for customers using tensile and bent beam specimens. for each stress level and temperature, the following sample sze is required:

|H.4.3 HIC/SWC test
The test for evaluation of resistance-to hydrogen- induced cracking shall meet the following acceptance criteria, with each ratio being the maximum permissible average for three sections per test specimen when tested in solution (Environment) A (see ISO 15156-2:2003, Table B.3):
a) crack sensitivity ratio (CSR) ≤ 2 %;
b) crack length ratio (CLR) ≤ 15 %;
c) crack thickness ratio (CTR) ≤ 5 %;
If HIC/SWC tests are conducted in alternative . media (see H.126.96.36.199) to simulate specific service conditions, alternative acceptance criteria may be agreed.
H.4.4 Hardness test
The maximum acceptabie hareness of an unexposed weld cap and external surface HAZ and base metal may be 275 HV10 or 26 HRC (73,0 HR 15N) where the equipment user agrees to the alternative weld cap hardness limit, the parent pipe wall thickness is greater than 9 mm, the weld cap is not exposed directly to the sour environment and the escape of hydrogen is not impeded, e.g by cathodic protection.
H.4.5 SSC test
After removal of the SSC test specimens (see H.7.3.2) from the test medium, the specimen surface previously under tension shall be examined under a low-power microscope at X10 magnification. The occurrence of any surface breaking fissures or cracks on the tension surface of the test specimen shall constitute failure of the specimen unless it can be demonstrated that these are not the result of sulfide stress cracking.
H.5 Surface conditions, imperfections and defects
