Savoy Piping Inc. supplies ASTM A106 Grade B (ASME SA106 Gr B) seamless carbon steel pipe — the workhorse grade for high-temperature pressure piping in refineries, power plants, petrochemical and process plants.

Order by OD/wall (or schedule), ends, length and documentation. Hot-finished is typical from NPS 2 upward; cold-drawn sizes need heat treatment after the final draw pass per the specification.

Typical strength: tensile min 60 ksi (415 MPa), yield min 35 ksi (240 MPa). Carbon max 0.30%, manganese 0.29–1.06%, silicon min 0.10%.

What is ASTM A106 Grade B?

ASTM A106 / ASME SA106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. Grade B is the most widely stocked and specified grade for steam, process fluid and utility lines where elevated temperature strength and weldability matter.

A106 is a seamless-only specification — do not confuse it with welded pipe standards.

How to select A106 Grade B

Confirm design temperature and pressure against the governing code (ASME B31.1 / B31.3, etc.), then lock schedule or wall, ends (PE/BE), delivery condition and test package (hydro, NDE, IBR, NACE if sour). If the datasheet asks for higher strength, review Grade C before substituting.

A106 Grade B vs A53 / A333

A106 = seamless high-temp service. A53 = general purpose seamless/welded. A333 = low-temperature / notch-toughness service (impact tested). Match the standard to the design temperature, not just the grade letter.

Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service

ASTM A106 pipe (also covered in ASME specifications as S/A 106) is the standard specification for seamless Carbon Steel Pipes for high-temperature service. Most common uses are in refineries and plants when gasses or fluids are transported at High Temperature and pressures. Savoy Piping Inc. supplies A106 / SA 106 pipe and stocks a full range of grades B/C in a size rage of NPS 1/8" to NPS 48", with nominal (average) wall thickness as given in ANSI B36.10. Pipe having other dimensions may be furnished provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification*. Pipe ordered under this specification shall be suitable for bending, for flanging, for welding, and for similar forming operations. A full range of A106 stock is available in Schedules 10 through 160, STD, XS, XXS. Unscheduled wall thicknesses available up to 4 inches.

Scope

ASTM A106 Seamless Pressure Pipe (also known as ASME SA106 pipe) covers seamless Carbon Steel nominal wall pipe for high-temperature service. Suitable for bending, flanging and similar forming operations. NPS 1-1/2″ and under may be either hot finished or cold drawn. NPS 2″ and larger shall be hot finished unless otherwise specified.

Process

  • Killed steel, with primary melting process being open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric-furnace, possibly combined with separate degassing or refining.
  • Steel cast in ingots or strand cast is permissible.
  • Hot-finished pipe need not be heat treated.
  • Cold-drawn pipe shall be heat treated after the final cold draw pass.

Permissible Variations in Wall Thickness for ASTM A106 Grade B Pipes
The minimum wall thickness at any point shall not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall thickness specified.

Permissible Variations in Weights per Foot for ASTM A106 Grade B Pipes
Weight of any length shall not vary more than 10% over and 3.5% under that specified. NOTE — NPS 4 and smaller — weighed in lots. Larger sizes shall be weighed separately by length.

Hydrostatic Testing for ASTM A106 Grade B Pipes

Inspection test pressures produce a stress in the pipe wall equal to 60% of specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) at room temperature. Maximum Pressures are not to exceed 2500 psi for NPS3 and must stay under 2800 psi for the larger sizes. Pressure is maintained for not less than 5 seconds.

S1. Product Analysis

S1.1 Product analysis shall be made on each length of pipe. Individual lengths failing to conform to the chemical composition requirements shall be rejected

S2. Transverse Tension Test

S2.1 A transverse tension test shall be made on a specimen from one end or both ends of each pipe NPS 8 [DN 200] and over. If this supplementary requirement is specified, the number of tests per pipe shall also be specified. If a specimen from any length fails to meet the required tensile properties (tensile, yield, and elongation), that length shall be rejected subject to retreatment in accordance with Specification A530/A530M and satisfactory retest.

S6. Carbon Equivalent

S6.1 The steel shall conform to a carbon equivalent(CE) of 0.50 maximum as determined by the following formula S6.2 A lower CE maximum may be agreed upon between the purchaser and the producer.

ASTM A 106 grade B Seamless Pressure Pipe

B) Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, for each reduction of 0.01 % below the specified carbon maximum, an increase of 0.06 % manganese above the specified maximum will be permitted up to a maximum of 1.65 %.

ASME SA 106 grade B Seamless Pressure Pipe

A106 Grade B vs Grade C — which should I order?

Grade B is the most common commercial grade (min tensile 60 ksi / 415 MPa, yield 35 ksi / 240 MPa). Grade C is stronger (70 ksi / 485 MPa tensile, 40 ksi / 275 MPa yield) when the design needs higher strength. Do not substitute without checking the PO and design code.

Is A106 the same as A53 Grade B?

No. A106 covers seamless pipe for high-temperature service. A53 covers seamless and welded black/galvanized pipe for general use. Many packages dual-certify A106B/A53B when chemistry and testing allow — confirm on the MTC.
