What is the quality of A106 pipe?
The grade of A106 pipe refers to its mechanical properties and is determined by the material composition and manufacturing process. A106 pipe comes in three different grades: A, B, and C. Grade A is a low carbon steel with a maximum carbon content of 0.25%, and grade B is a medium carbon steel with a maximum carbon content of 0.30%. Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service
ASTM A106 pipe (also covered in ASME specifications as S/A 106) is the standard specification for seamless Carbon Steel Pipe and Steel Productsfor high-temperature service. Most common uses are in refineries and plants when gasses or fluids are transported at High Temperature and pressures. Federal Stainless Steel Supply is a world leader in the supply of A106 / SA 106 pipe and stocks a full range of grades B/C in a size rage of NPS 1/8" to NPS 48", with nominal (average) wall thickness as given in ANSI B36.10. Pipe having other dimensions may be furnished provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification*. Pipe ordered under this specification shall be suitable for bending, for flanging, for welding, and for similar forming operations. A full range of A106 stock is available in Schedules 10 through 160, STD, XS, XXS. Unscheduled wall thicknesses available up to 4 inches.

Scope
ASTM A106 Seamless Pressure Pipe (also known as ASME SA106 pipe) covers seamless carbon steel and Corten Steel nominal wall pipe for high-temperature service. Suitable for bending, flanging and similar forming operations. NPS 1-1/2″ and under may be either hot finished or cold drawn. NPS 2″ and larger shall be hot finished unless otherwise specified.
Process
- Killed steel, with primary melting process being open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric-furnace, possibly combined with separate degassing or refining
- Steel cast in ingots or strand cast is permissible.
- Hot-finished pipe need not be heat treated.
- Cold-drawn pipe shall be heat treated after the final cold draw pass

Weight of any length shall not vary more than 10% over and 3.5% under that specified. NOTE — NPS 4 and smaller — weighed in lots. Larger sizes shall be weighed separately by length.

Hydrostatic Testing for ASTM A106 grade C Pipes
Inspection test pressures produce a stress in the pipe wall equal to 60% of specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) at room temperature. Maximum Pressures are not to exceed 2500 psi for NPS3 and must stay under 2800 psi for the larger sizes. Pressure is maintained for not less than 5 seconds.
