What is 304?

304 (UNS S30400): 18Cr-8Ni (approx. 18–20% Cr, 8–10.5% Ni). Mechanical guide: min tensile ~515 MPa (75 ksi), min yield ~205 MPa (30 ksi) for common A312 pipe grades — confirm PO / ASME SA-312.

Selection guidance

Choose 304 for general corrosion resistance and formability. Prefer 304L for heavy welded sections; 304H when elevated-temperature carbon is required; move to 316/316L for chloride / marine exposure.

304 vs 316: molybdenum in 316 improves pitting resistance in chlorides. 304 vs 304L: 304L (≤0.030% C) reduces sensitization risk in as-welded heavy gauge.
