304L (UNS S30403): 18Cr-8Ni low carbon (C ≤ 0.030%). Mechanical guide: min tensile ~485 MPa (70 ksi), min yield ~170 MPa (25 ksi) typical for A312 TP304L — confirm PO.

  • Welded process piping and tanks in food, pharma and chemical plants
  • Heavy-gauge fabrications where sensitization of standard 304 is a risk

  • General corrosive service when chloride levels do not require Mo-bearing grades

Selection guidance

Specify 304L when the PO calls for as-welded corrosion resistance. Dual-cert 304/304L is common in stock — still verify carbon and strength against the datasheet. For chlorides use 316L.

304L vs 316L: same low-carbon logic; 316L adds Mo for pitting. 304L vs 304H: opposite carbon strategy — do not substitute for high-temperature creep service.
