A691 Grade 1-1/4CR EFW Chrome Moly Pipe (1.25Cr-0.5Mo)

ASME SA691 1-1/4CR electric-fusion-welded alloy steel pipe for high-pressure elevated-temperature service

ASTM A691 1-1/4CR electric-fusion-welded chrome moly alloy steel pipe

Savoy Piping Inc. supplies ASTM A691 Grade 1-1/4CR / ASME SA691 Grade 1-1/4CR electric-fusion-welded chrome moly pipe — 1.25Cr-0.5Mo plate-welded pipe for high-pressure elevated-temperature service in large diameters where seamless chrome moly is impractical.

Typically fabricated from Cr-Mo pressure-vessel plate equivalent to ~1.25Cr-0.5Mo (A387 Gr.11 class plate families). Buyers usually need more than a grade name: specify class (heat treatment + radiography + pressure test), OD, wall, ends and documentation up front.

Where Grade 1-1/4CR fits: large-diameter headers, steam and process lines where seamless P11 is impractical. Matching seamless / tube products: ASTM A335 P11 and ASTM A213 T11.

Related grades: 1-1/4CR, 2-1/4CR, 5CR, 9CR, 91. Hub: ASTM A691 grades / ASME SA691.

What is ASTM A691 Grade 1-1/4CR pipe?

ASTM A691 / ASME SA691 Grade 1-1/4CR is electric-fusion-welded alloy steel pipe fabricated from pressure-vessel-quality plate for high-pressure service at elevated temperatures. Chemistry is about 1.00–1.50% chromium and 0.44–0.65% molybdenum.

Unlike seamless ASTM A335 P11, A691 Grade 1-1/4CR is made by forming and fusion-welding plate with filler metal. That makes it a practical route for larger OD and heavy fabrication packages, provided the specified class, NDE and heat treatment are met.

Always order grade + class together, and confirm weld procedure / PWHT requirements for the chrome moly chemistry involved.

Typical applications of ASTM A691 Grade 1-1/4CR

  • Large-diameter intermediate-temperature steam / process headers
  • Power and HRSG connecting piping in heavy wall / large OD sizes
  • Petrochemical elevated-temperature lines fabricated from PVQ plate
  • Projects specifying A691 class (heat treatment + RT + pressure test)
  • Matched Cr-Mo systems with A335 P11 / A213 T11

Grade 1-1/4CR selection guidance

1-1/4CR is the EFW counterpart chemistry to P11/T11. Choose 2-1/4CR when hotter steam/process duty needs ~2.25Cr-1Mo. Choose 5CR / 9CR for higher-chromium refinery/process service. Choose Grade 91 for CSEF modified 9Cr large-diameter systems.

A Requires quenching and tempering

B 9CR steel is an air-hardenable steel, at times retaining down to near atmospheric temperature. Good practice is to allow the steel to cool to 15 F or Lower before subjecting the steel to a tempering treatment or post-weld heat treatment.

Frequently asked questions — ASTM A691 1-1/4CR

What is ASTM A691 Grade 1-1/4CR used for?

ASTM A691 Grade 1-1/4CR is electric-fusion-welded chrome moly pipe (~1.25Cr-0.5Mo) made from pressure-vessel-quality plate for high-pressure, elevated-temperature service — typically large diameters where seamless pipe is difficult or uneconomical.

How is A691 1-1/4CR different from A335 P11?

Chemistry intent is similar (~1.25Cr-0.5Mo), but A335 P11 is seamless pipe while A691 1-1/4CR is EFW pipe fabricated from plate with filler metal. A691 is commonly used for larger OD / heavier fabrication packages and is ordered by grade plus class.

What does the A691 class number mean?

Class designates manufacturing heat treatment, whether the weld is radiographically examined, and whether the pipe is pressure tested. Always specify both grade and class on the purchase order.

What sizes are typical for A691 1-1/4CR?

A691 nominally covers larger pipe (commonly from about 16" OD upward) with substantial wall thickness. Other dimensions may be furnished when they meet the specification. Confirm OD, wall, class and testing on the enquiry.
