Savoy Piping Inc. supplies ASTM A691 Grade 2-1/4CR / ASME SA691 Grade 2-1/4CR electric-fusion-welded chrome moly pipe — 2.25Cr-1Mo plate-welded pipe for high-pressure elevated-temperature service in large diameters where seamless chrome moly is impractical.
Typically fabricated from ~2.25Cr-1Mo pressure-vessel plate (A387 Gr.22 class families). Buyers usually need more than a grade name: specify class (heat treatment + radiography + pressure test), OD, wall, ends and documentation up front.
Where Grade 2-1/4CR fits: large-diameter main steam, hot process and header fabrication where seamless P22 is impractical. Matching seamless / tube products: ASTM A335 P22 and ASTM A213 T22.

ASTM A691 / ASME SA691 Grade 2-1/4CR is electric-fusion-welded alloy steel pipe fabricated from pressure-vessel-quality plate for high-pressure service at elevated temperatures. Chemistry is about 1.90–2.60% chromium and 0.87–1.13% molybdenum.
Unlike seamless ASTM A335 P22, A691 Grade 2-1/4CR is made by forming and fusion-welding plate with filler metal. That makes it a practical route for larger OD and heavy fabrication packages, provided the specified class, NDE and heat treatment are met.
Always order grade + class together, and confirm weld procedure / PWHT requirements for the chrome moly chemistry involved.
2-1/4CR aligns with P22/T22 chemistry for hotter duty than 1-1/4CR. Stay with 1-1/4CR for intermediate temperatures. Move to Grade 91 when CSEF creep design requires modified 9Cr in large EFW sizes.

ASTM A691 Grade 2-1/4CR (~2.25Cr-1Mo) EFW pipe is used for high-pressure, high-temperature large-diameter piping — often hot steam and process headers — fabricated from PVQ chrome moly plate.
Use seamless A335 P22 when the piping class calls for seamless product. Use A691 2-1/4CR when the design needs EFW plate-welded pipe, typically in larger diameters or fabrication packages. Do not interchange product forms without engineering approval.
They are companion designations for the same grade family. Procurement often lists ASTM A691 / ASME SA691 together; confirm documentation, class and testing on the PO.
Depending on class and PO, expect mechanical tests, weld examination (often radiography), pressure testing, hardness/heat-treatment verification, and EN 10204 3.1/3.2 MTCs. Supplementary NDE may be added by the buyer.
We supply this product for domestic and export projects with MTC (EN 10204 3.1 standard; 3.2 / TPI on request). Include destination, Incoterms and inspection needs on the RFQ.
