Savoy Piping Inc. supplies ASTM A691 Grade 9CR / ASME SA691 Grade 9CR electric-fusion-welded chrome moly pipe — 9Cr-1Mo plate-welded pipe for high-pressure elevated-temperature service in large diameters where seamless chrome moly is impractical.

Typically fabricated from ~9Cr-1Mo pressure-vessel plate (A387 Gr.9 class families). Buyers usually need more than a grade name: specify class (heat treatment + radiography + pressure test), OD, wall, ends and documentation up front.

Where Grade 9CR fits: large-diameter severe heater and process lines needing 9Cr sulfidation/oxidation resistance. Matching seamless / tube products: ASTM A335 P9 and ASTM A213 T9.

What is ASTM A691 Grade 9CR pipe?

ASTM A691 / ASME SA691 Grade 9CR is electric-fusion-welded alloy steel pipe fabricated from pressure-vessel-quality plate for high-pressure service at elevated temperatures. Chemistry is about 8–10% chromium and ~1% molybdenum.

Unlike seamless ASTM A335 P9, A691 Grade 9CR is made by forming and fusion-welding plate with filler metal. That makes it a practical route for larger OD and heavy fabrication packages, provided the specified class, NDE and heat treatment are met.

Always order grade + class together, and confirm weld procedure / PWHT requirements for the chrome moly chemistry involved.

Grade 9CR selection guidance

Classic 9CR is traditional 9Cr-1Mo EFW process pipe — not the same as CSEF Grade 91. Use 9CR for severe process/sulfidation duty; use Grade 91 when creep-strength-enhanced modified 9Cr is required for advanced steam systems.

Is A691 9CR the same as A691 Grade 91?

No. Grade 9CR is classic 9Cr-1Mo chrome moly. Grade 91 is modified 9Cr-1Mo-V CSEF material with different chemistry, heat treatment and creep design intent. Do not substitute without design approval.

How does A691 9CR relate to A335 P9?

Both target ~9Cr-1Mo performance. A335 P9 is seamless; A691 9CR is EFW plate-welded pipe typically for larger OD high-pressure service.
