Typically fabricated from Grade 92 / tungsten-bearing 9Cr CSEF pressure-vessel plate families. Buyers usually need more than a grade name: specify class (heat treatment + radiography + pressure test), OD, wall, ends and documentation up front.

What is ASTM A691 Grade 92 pipe?

ASTM A691 / ASME SA691 Grade 92 is electric-fusion-welded alloy steel pipe fabricated from pressure-vessel-quality plate for high-pressure service at elevated temperatures. Chemistry is tungsten-bearing 9Cr CSEF plate chemistry aligned to Grade 92 / P92 families (reduced Mo vs Grade 91, with intentional W).

Unlike seamless ASTM A335 P92, A691 Grade 92 is made by forming and fusion-welding plate with filler metal. That makes it a practical route for larger OD and heavy fabrication packages, provided the specified class, NDE and heat treatment are met.

Always order grade + class together, and confirm weld procedure / PWHT requirements for the chrome moly chemistry involved.

Grade 92 selection guidance

Grade 92 is tungsten-bearing CSEF 9Cr — not classic 9CR and not Grade 91. Use Grade 92 when creep design demands the P92/T92 chemistry family in EFW form. Pair with seamless P92/T92 only within an approved materials strategy.

ASTM A691 Grade 92 EFW pipe is used for high-pressure, high-temperature large-diameter steam and process systems requiring tungsten-bearing 9Cr CSEF chemistry when electric-fusion-welded plate pipe is specified.

A691 Grade 92 vs A335 P92?

Both are modified 9Cr CSEF chrome moly families. A335 P92 is seamless pipe; A691 Grade 92 is EFW pipe from PVQ plate. Product form, welding and inspection packages differ — follow the piping class.

Why is hardness / PWHT critical for Grade 92 EFW?

CSEF 9Cr materials are sensitive to incorrect heat treatment and welding practice. Soft or over-hard zones can damage creep life or toughness. Projects usually mandate controlled PWHT and hardness surveys.
